ChatXport for Windows
The browser version opens a chat right now, on any device, with nothing to install. The desktop app is for people who come back to their exports again and again: it runs offline on your Windows PC and adds tools for working across many chats.
What the desktop app adds
Both versions read your export on your own device and never upload it. The desktop app adds:
- Works offline. After you install and activate it, it runs with no internet connection.
- No message limit on the paid versions, with a licence that never expires.
- Bookmarks for the messages you want to come back to, and notes on a chat (Pro).
- Multi-tab viewing and cross-chat search, to look across several chats at once (Pro).
- Workspaces to organise your chats, with backup and restore (Pro).
- Priority support for 12 months with a paid licence. After that it can be renewed for $20 a year if you want it; the app keeps working either way.
The browser version is a better fit if you just need to read a chat now: it needs no install, works on phones as well as computers, and the full unlock is a one-time $9 in your browser. It keeps only your most recent chat on the device, so it is not built for managing many chats over time.
The desktop app runs on Windows 10 and 11 and opens exports from both Android and iPhone.

Installing on Windows
Windows will show a warning the first time you run the installer, and we would rather you know why before you see it. The ChatXport installer is not code-signed yet, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen shows a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen that lists the publisher as "Unknown publisher". It is not a virus alert. It means Windows has not yet built a reputation for a new app from a small publisher. We plan to sign the installer once there are enough customers to cover the cost of the certificate.
- Download the installer from the free download page or your purchase email, and save it somewhere you can find it, such as Downloads.
- Double-click it. When "Windows protected your PC" appears, click the small More info link, then the Run anyway button. Run anyway only appears after More info.
- Follow the installer. From here it is a normal Windows install: pick a folder, click Next, then Finish. ChatXport opens.
Worth knowing
Each new version starts its SmartScreen reputation from zero, so you may see the warning again after an update. Some antivirus tools also flag unsigned installers as a precaution. If yours does, email hello@chatxport.com with the antivirus name and the message you saw.
Your chats stay on your PC. The installer does not track you. The free version makes no network requests; a paid version checks your licence key with Gumroad when you activate it and about every 30 days after that, to confirm the purchase was not refunded. Only the licence key is sent. Details are in the privacy policy.
