How to find old WhatsApp messages by date or keyword

To find an old WhatsApp message, open the chat, start a search, and either type a word or tap the calendar icon to jump to a date. That works for a quick lookup. If you need every message between two dates, only what one person said, or a list you can hand to someone else, export the chat and search the export. This guide covers both.

The short answer

Inside WhatsApp, open the chat, start a search, and either type a word or tap the calendar icon and pick a day. WhatsApp highlights matching messages, or scrolls to the date you chose. This is fine when you roughly know what you are looking for and the chat is still on your phone.

It gets harder when you need more than one hit. WhatsApp search cannot show only one person's messages, cannot filter to a range of dates, and gives you no list you can save or share. For that, export the chat and search the export on a computer or in a browser. The steps for both are below.

Search inside WhatsApp

WhatsApp's own search is the quickest place to start.

On Android:

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the three dots in the top corner, then Search. You can also tap the contact or group name and then the Search button under it.
  3. Type a word to find messages that contain it, and use the arrows to step between matches.
  4. To go to a date instead, tap the calendar icon in the search bar and choose the day.

On iPhone:

  1. Open the chat and tap the contact or group name at the top.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Type a word and use the arrows to move between matches, or tap the calendar icon to jump to a date.

WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps have the same in-chat search, including the calendar button. You can also search from the main chats list to look for a word across all your chats at once.

Worth knowing

The date search was added on Android in early 2024, after iPhone, Mac and WhatsApp Web. If you do not see the calendar icon, update WhatsApp. It moves to one day at a time; there is no option to pick a range.

Where WhatsApp search falls short

For a single message, in-app search is usually enough. For anything you need to review carefully, it runs into limits:

These matter most when a chat is needed for something serious: a dispute with a landlord or employer, a complaint to HR, a question from a lawyer, or simply checking what was agreed in a family group a year ago.

Search an export instead

Exporting a chat gives you a copy of it as a text file, or a .zip that holds the text file plus photos, voice notes and documents. You can then search it with better tools than the phone offers.

To export on Android:

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the three dots, then More, then Export chat.
  3. Choose Without media or Include media.
  4. Send it to yourself by email, save it to the phone, or upload it to your cloud drive.

To export on iPhone:

  1. Open the chat and tap the contact or group name.
  2. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  3. Choose Without Media or Attach Media.
  4. Send it on from the share sheet, for example Mail, AirDrop or Save to Files.

Exporting does not remove anything from the chat. WhatsApp limits how much one export can hold, and it only attaches the most recent media when you include media. On a very long chat, open the export afterwards and check that the earliest messages you need are there.

Option A: Search the text file yourself

If you exported a .zip, extract it first. Then open the .txt file in any text editor, such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac, and use Find (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F).

Each line in the file starts with the date and time, then the sender's name, then the message. That means you can search for a date as text, or for someone's name followed by a colon, to step through their messages. It is free and nothing leaves your computer.

The drawbacks are the same as reading the raw file generally. Dates are written in whatever format your phone used, so a search for "03/04" may match the 3rd of April or the 4th of March depending on the phone. Multi-line messages break across lines. Photos and voice notes show up only as file names. And you are still stepping through matches one by one rather than seeing a filtered list.

Option B: Search the export in ChatXport

ChatXport opens a WhatsApp export in your browser and lays it out as a conversation again. The file is read on your own device. It is not uploaded, and you do not need an account.

Once the chat is open, the search and filters work together:

  1. Go to app.chatxport.com and drop in your .zip or .txt export.
  2. Type in the search box. It matches message text, sender names and attachment file names, and the chat narrows to only the matching messages.
  3. Open the filters and set a From and To date to limit the chat to a period.
  4. In a group chat, choose one person under Show to see only their messages.
  5. If the export includes media, tap Images, Videos, Audio or Documents to show only messages with that kind of attachment. Each chip shows how many there are.
  6. Switch between the conversation, table and timeline views. The table view lists each message as a numbered row with date, time, sender and attachments, which is easier to scan than chat bubbles.

Because the filters combine, you can ask for something like every message from one colleague that mentions "invoice" between January and April, and see the whole list at once.

Search your chat here

Drop in your export and filter it by date, sender or keyword. The first 300 messages are free.

Open ChatXport

Chats of 300 messages or fewer are free in full. For longer chats, the first 300 messages are free to read and search, and a one-time $9 unlock opens the whole chat. The unlock also lets you save the filtered view as a PDF or Excel file, which is useful when you need to give the messages to someone else. It is a single payment, not a subscription.

Which method should you use?

If the message is not there

If neither WhatsApp search nor the export shows a message you are sure was sent, check these:

If you search chats often

If you go through WhatsApp exports regularly, for example in casework, HR investigations or research, the ChatXport desktop app for Windows stores chats on your computer and adds search across several chats at once, along with bookmarks, notes and workspaces. Like the browser version, it works on your own machine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I search WhatsApp messages by date?

Yes. Inside a chat, start a search and tap the calendar icon, then pick a day. WhatsApp scrolls to the messages from that date. It picks one day at a time, not a range.

Can I see only one person's messages in a group chat?

Not in WhatsApp itself. You can search for a word, but you cannot hide everyone else's messages. In a chat export opened in ChatXport you can choose one sender and see only their messages.

Why can't I find a message I know was sent?

Search only covers messages still stored on your phone. If the message was deleted, the chat was cleared, or you moved to a new phone without restoring a backup, it will not appear. Spelling also matters, since search looks for the exact characters you type.

Can I search for a photo or document in a chat?

WhatsApp keeps a chat's media, links and documents under the contact or group info screen. In an export with media you can also search by file name, or in ChatXport filter the chat to images, videos, audio or documents.

Does exporting a chat let me search messages I deleted?

No. An export is a copy of what is in the chat on your phone at that moment. Deleted messages are not in it.

Is it safe to upload a chat to a search tool?

Uploading means a copy of the conversation sits on someone else's server. If the chat is private, search it on your own device instead, for example in a text editor, or in ChatXport, which reads the export inside your browser without uploading it.

Read your own chat the same way

Drop in your WhatsApp export and it opens as a conversation, right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the first 300 messages are free.
